Striving to Improve Working Conditions in Swiss Nursing Homes

Swiss nursing homes are facing an increasing demand for care, exacerbated by a persistent staff shortage. High turnover rates further intensify the pressure on caregivers, leading to absenteeism, resignations, and departures from the sector. Despite various initiatives aimed at enhancing recruitment and retention, the expected improvements have yet to materialize.

This Policy Brief provides recommendations for improving the working conditions of caregivers in Swiss nursing homes. Drawing on examples of good practice and findings from research - based on national qualitative and quantitative data, reports from relevant organizations, and international literature – the brief highlights key strategies to support the workforce. These include fostering a receptive and supportive leadership culture, co-designing care and work organization through increased autonomy, and reducing administrative burdens with tailored digital platforms.

To support the implementation of these recommendations, a stakeholder dialogue was held with care workers, managers, and experts. The insights gathered informed a co-created Best Practice Brochure, which offers concrete, evidence-informed actions tailored to the realities of Swiss nursing homes.
