Health Insurance Literacy

Navigating the Swiss health insurance system

The ability to navigate, select, and adequately use health insurance, referred to as Health Insurance Literacy (HIL), is increasingly important for individuals to make informed choices relevant to their health and finances within the Swiss health insurance system. To empower citizens to make well-informed decisions and address this issue, the Policy Brief makes the following recommendations:

i) Assess the distribution of HIL in Switzerland to identify vulnerable groups and individuals

ii) Design and provide decision support tools to help individuals navigate and use health insurance

iii) Develop and strengthen relevant skills like HIL and information literacy through compulsory education
