4th November 2021: Honorary Doctorate Degree in Health Sciences Awarded to Prof. Charles P. Friedman

During the Dies Academicus the University of Lucerne on the 4th of November 2021 Prof. Charles “Chuck” Friedman was awarded with an honorary doctorate degree in the Health Sciences.

His research has translated the abstract concept of learning health systems - which he has referred to as something magical - into an operational and functioning entity for the continuous integration of knowledge into health systems, policy, and practice.

“He first explored the concept of Learning Health Systems in 2010 through the Institute of Medicine while at the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC). Under his leadership, the department of Medical Education at the University of Michigan transformed into the Department of Learning Health Sciences, a “first in the nation” medical school academic department dedicated to the sciences of learning at all levels from learning by individuals, to learning by teams and organizations, and learning by ultra-large scale systems, such as entire nations.” https://medicine.umich.edu/dept/lhs/charles-p-friedman-phd

Professor Friedman’s work has inspired the development of the Swiss Learning Health System (SLHS) hosted at the Department of Health Sciences and Medicine at the University of Lucerne. Recognizing his contribution, a symposium took place after the awards ceremony, which showcased his work and included a panel discussion involving members of the department and the SLHS.
