Humane Papillomavirus-Impfung in der Schweizer Allgemeinpraxis

HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections and can lead to serious health issues, including several types of cancer in both women and men. A vaccination that can safely and reliably protect against HPV infections is available. Although the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health recommends HPV vaccination, the overall vaccination uptake remains insufficient.

This policy brief takes a closer look at why vaccination rates remain low—especially from the perspective of general practice, where physicians are in a unique position to make a difference as they become the main point of contact for all health issues of young adults. Accordingly, they can identify those who are not yet vaccinated and offer them catch-up vaccinations.

The policy brief highlights several obstacles: complex administrative requirements that make it harder for General practitioners (GPs) to offer the vaccine, missed chances to talk about vaccination during visits, and a lingering misconception that HPV is only a women’s issue. In reality, men are also at risk and remain significantly under-vaccinated.

To help close these gaps, the brief offers three practical solutions: make access to the vaccine easier by reducing paperwork for GPs, encourage doctors to check vaccination status more often during any kind of visit, and raise awareness—especially among young men—about why getting vaccinated matters. These recommendations are backed by strategies that consider real-world challenges, such as time constraints, limited resources, and the need for better communication. By supporting GPs and informing the public, we can move toward fairer vaccine coverage and stronger protection for everyone.
