Ensuring the sustainability of suicide prevention projects

The number of suicides in Switzerland has been decreasing, indicating the potential effectiveness of the implemented suicide prevention measures. However, sustaining the success of related projects beyond the initial implementation phase poses challenges. Factors contributing to the sustainability of measures include integration into existing systems, stable funding, reliable and positive evaluation results and strengthening cooperation with stakeholders. This policy brief provides recommendations based on expert opinions and best practices to ensure the long-lasting impact of suicide prevention projects, supporting ongoing progress in Switzerland.

The sustainability of prevention projects is of interest to the target groups, project initiators, and funders, among others. With the introduction of four new suicide prevention projects in Switzerland, we aim to investigate the success factors that enable the sustainable continuation of these measures after the initial implementation and funding period.
